Today (Sept. 19) is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. If you listened to me on Roll Out of Bed with Rob this morning, you heard me talk like a pirate for the entire morning. I went all out with a gravelly old fashioned voice, a la Barbosa from Pirates of the Caribbean. It was a lot of fun.

If you too would like to talk like a pirate, here are some useful tips:

  • Use the words "ye", "me", and "aye" instead of "you" "my",and "yes". The real meat and potatoes of pirate speech.
  • Refer to people with pirate lingo names as much as possible. "Matey" is the most common, but I also enjoy "Scallywag," "Lubber," "Bilge Rat," and my personal favorite "Scurvy Dog."
  •  As often as possible, start off each sentence with a nautical exclamation, such as "Avast" or "Shiver me timbers." Even if it's not necessary, throw it in when you can.
  • The most important and basic pirate talking tip of all: Say "Arrrrr" all  the time. Seriously, as much as you possibly can.

There are a few different "Pirate Translators" online you can use, but I haven't really found one I like. For extra fun, you can turn Google into Pirate Mode, and on Facebook you can switch your language to "Pirate," which is pretty awesome.

For a lot more detail, you can check out the original "Talk Like A Pirate Day" website.  I hope you all join me today, at least once, as we celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
