Growing up as a kid in Missouri meant my family had dogs. Lots and lots of dogs. If you're wanting to find a dog up for adoption in Missouri right now, what you're more than likely to find will be a breed that's complicated based on new numbers.

When I was born, my mom and dad had a toy terrier. After she passed away from old age (and having to deal with me as a kid), we adopted a miniature schnauzer. His name was Fritz and he despised me which proves the dog had good taste, but I digress.

That's right. Missouri has lots of mutts that need homes and that's a crying shame. Some of the best dogs I've had the chance to hang out with are the ones with a complicated lineage. Those are the animals that seem to have the most fun personalities, yet they are the least desirable adoption breed since many families understandably want a pure breed.

The other disappointing thing about the most common dog breeds available for adoption in Missouri are the #2 and #3 most common which are pit bulls and mixed breed pit bulls. Pit bulls have an undeserved bad reputation of being violent pets. I was once told there is no such thing as a bad pit bull. There were only some bad pit bull owners. I believe that's true.
