The first day of the 110th Missouri State Fair began today with speeches and music from the Marshall Municipal Band in front of the Fire Station on the North Side of the Fairgrounds. A large crowd endured the heat, as Mark Wolfe, the Missouri State Fair Director lead off with a speech that recognized the success and longevity of the fair.

Wolfe also presented the Chief of the Missouri State Fair fire station Rick Dozer with a plaque commemorating the 50th anniversary of the all-volunteer fire department. Several local dignitaries were on hand for the opening ceremony including Sedalia Mayor Elaine Horn, Missouri State Senator Mike Parsons, and Missouri State Representative Stanley Cox.

The keynote speech was given by Governor Jay Nixon, who praised those responsible for the fair’s success year after year. Nixon also recognized the problems the weather has caused Missouri farmers this year, and hopes the future holds better weather for all of Missouri. The Governor said he is looking forward to the Ham Breakfast that will be held on August 16 and the First Ladies Pie Contest, where he says he takes the opportunity to sample many of the pies.

Governor Nixon ended with the hope that all Missouri citizens will join him in celebrating the hope for a brighter future for Missouri, at this year’s Missouri State Fair.
