The Hannibal Pirates are gearing up for a second go at the Mexico Bulldogs, this time in District play.

The Pirates defeated Mexico back in September by a score of 40-0…(!!!) Don’t think that it will be as easy this time. The Bulldogs are coming off a double overtime win in Kirksville against the previously undefeated Tigers. It was Mexico’s first District victory since 2021. They will be looking to build on that confidence.

History though is not on Mexico’s side. Hannibal has beaten Mexico the last eight times the two teams have tangled with the Bulldogs last win came in 2017. The last time Mexico beat Hannibal in District play was 2014, as they have dropped the last three vs. Hannibal in the second season. You could make the case that Mexico is due to buck the trend however, and aren't to be overlooked.

The Pirates have found their identity. The defense has gotten solid, only allowing an average of just over 15 points per game since the two last played while the offense is averaging just under 40 points per game in the same window. The Pirates have also scored 50 plus points 5 times this season.

The Bulldogs took advantage of timely turnovers from Kirksville. Pirate coach Jeff Gschwender is well aware and will be in the Pirate ears about not turning the ball over.
