Yes, Missouri really does have billions of pounds of cheese stored underground in caves - more or less. It's also true that the internet is obsessing about all of that cheddar once again.

I saw this very dairy topic come up on the Missouri sub-Reddit again just days ago. That person noticed what I had also picked up on. The Missouri cheese caves are a thing again.

Where are the Missouri cheese caves located?

As Mental Floss and countless others have documented, the cheese caves the internet cannot get enough of are a part of the Springfield Underground near (you guessed it) Springfield, Missouri. This is not (that I know of) a plot of the Illuminati. This is a facility that has been storing things underground for half a century.

Why store cheese underground?

The Springfield Underground takes advantage of the coolness and insulation of the Earth. Temperatures are maintained at a very comfortable chilly temperature that is perfect for cheese preservation. There are some that believe the Missouri cheese caves have affected dairy prices and/or are part of the government's end of the world planning scenario. I have no way to prove any of that is true or not true since my government clearance is probably below that of an average janitor for a convenience store, but I do know the Missouri cheese caves are real. What I can't figure out is why periodically the internet becomes obsessed with them - again.
