KC Chiefs Winning Streak In Jeopardy?

The Kansas City Chiefs right now are the #1 seed in the AFC.  They have won 7 games in a row.  If they win out, the road to the Super Bowl will go through Arrowhead Stadium.  But their winning streak is in jeopardy.  They battle the Steelers on Sunday, and the Chiefs may not be at full strength.

This coronavirus pandemic isn't going away with the new Omicron variant and now it is affecting some of the most valuable Chiefs players.  The Chiefs are adding tight end Travis Kelce, kicker Harrison Butker and cornerback Charvarius Ward as well, bringing to six the number of Kansas City players who are currently on the COVID list.  Defensive tackle Chris Jones, linebacker Willie Gay Jr. and wide receiver Josh Gordon, all of whom had to sit out the Chiefs' overtime road win against the L.A. Chargers on Thursday, were placed on the COVID list last week.

As many of you know, the NFL did not mandate getting vaccinated, but those who haven't been and test positive for COVID, have stricter policies for when they can return.  Under the NFL's COVID-19 protocols issued last summer, vaccinated players or staff members who tested positive and were asymptomatic were allowed to return following two negative tests taken 24 hours apart.

If Travis (who was just named to the Pro Bowl) does not clear protocol, the team will be left with tight ends Blake Bell and rookie Noah Gray on their active 53-player roster. The Chiefs have tight ends Mark Vital and Nakia Griffin-Stewart on their practice squad.

As for their kicker, the team signed Elliot Fry as a back up if Butker can't go.  Lets hope all of the players in the protocol were vaccinated and can get back on the field for Sunday's game.  The Steelers will be a tough team since they are fighting for a playoff spot.  And this defense has been playing so much better that I want them to keep the momentum going and get the only 1st round bye in playoffs.  A 3rd straight trip to the Super Bowl is possible.  Lets hope the COVID 19 pandemic doesn't play a hand in it.  We defeated the Packers partly because Aaron Rodgers tested positive and was unable to play against us.
