Unusual October Weather For West Central Missouri Tonight!
Update 1:00 PM October 30, 2024
The latest information from the National Weather Service still indicates that the Kansas City area is at an enhanced risk for severe weather this afternoon and this evening. While the area under this enhanced risk for severe weather hasn't changed, the areas where there is a slight risk for severe weather have been expanded to not only include Sedalia, Knob Noster, Warrensburg, and Higginsville. But Osage Beach, Jefferson City, Booneville, Columbia, Moberly, Mexico, and beyond.
The National Weather Service says risks include wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour, tornadoes, and lightning. While storms could develop anytime after 4:00 PM CDT, the National Weather Service has offered the following guidance:
Storms will impact the Kansas City area this evening from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM CDT and will move through the Sedalia area from 10:00 PM to 11:00 PM CDT. Storms will continue throughout the overnight hours.
Our forecaster, Weatherology, predicts scattered thunderstorms are likely with a 90% chance of precipitation. Weatherology says, "As an area of low pressure develops along a surface cold frontal boundary for this afternoon, which currently stretches from the western Great Lakes all the way down to west Texas, we're tracking the risk for scattered severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Large hail, damaging wind gusts, and even some tornadoes will be possible with any of the strongest storms."
Tomorrow will be one of those days we'd expect during the tornado season in Missouri: April, May, or June. Yet, Mother Nature doesn't seem to be fooling around with the potential for some powerful storms in West Central Missouri tomorrow.
Sedalia, Knob Noster, Warrensburg, and Higginsville find themselves at a slight risk for severe storms with tomorrow's expected weather, Wednesday, October 30, 2024. Lee's Summit, Harrisonville, and Kansas City proper are at an enhanced risk for severe weather.
The National Weather Service out of Kansas City says, "The warm temperatures with strong winds will continue through tomorrow. However, tomorrow late afternoon through the evening a cold front will move through the area bringing the chance for severe weather. The main threats will be for damaging winds however, a few tornadoes cannot be ruled out."
The storms should roll through Kansas City between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM CDT and will impact most of us, depending on your location in West Central Missouri, between 10:00 PM and 1:00 AM CDT.
Our forecaster, Weatherology, is calling for a 95% chance of precipitation tomorrow night, October 30, 2024. Almost three-quarters of an inch of rainfall is possible, with a low of 48. You can keep up with Weatherology's forecast here and hourly on Townsquare Sedalia-Warrensburg's radio stations.
The National Weather Service says the main threat will be damaging winds and the potential for a brief period of large hail at the beginning of the event. While tornado chances are low, that cannot be ruled completely out. While areas that see the storms will pick up significant rainfall amounts, flooding is not expected.
Moving forward, the National Weather Service's 8-14-day outlook from November 5, 2024, to November 11, 2024, says above-normal temperatures and precipitation are slightly favored.
