We're now in the time of year when many meteorologists and Farmer's Almanac are beginning to make their forecast for what the upcoming winter will be like in Missouri. If you'd like the most accurate idea of how bad winter will be, you'd be wise to pay close attention to the squirrels in Missouri.

How can Missouri squirrels forecast weather? I'm not the only one that believes in their sense for winter weather. Even the "old" Farmer's Almanac mentions that watching squirrels is one of the keys to understanding what the upcoming winter weather in Missouri will be like.

Here's what you need to pay attention to when it comes to squirrels and winter in Missouri...

  • If you see a squirrel nest being built lower in a tree, the upcoming winter will be mild
  • If you see a squirrel nest being built near the tops of a tree, the upcoming winter will be harsh

I have seen this proven accurate more times than not. Last winter, I noticed the squirrels near our Missouri house were building nests lower than the year before and winter did end up being milder than most. The previous year, the nests were near the tops of the trees and winter was bitter, cold and snowy.

As we now enter Fall, this is the time when squirrels will begin building their nests for the weather that is to come.

You would be wise to watch the squirrels if you're wondering what Missouri's winter will be like. The squirrels know.
