Ever Hear Your Grandparents Say This?
I just went through a Facebook post that had a list of about 20 words that you most likely don't use or haven't heard of before. I guess you go a step further and say there are some phrases that we haven't heard in a while since they came out of our grandparent's mouths.
We've all heard them...those old sayings that our grandparents uttered one time or another in their lifetime. See if you've heard these memorable sayings.
At some point in your lifetime, you've most likely heard some of these sayings from your grandparents and then, there are some that we've never heard. Sometimes we just shook our heads and wondered what the heck they were talking about. See how many of these you've heard and you know the meaning...
"I'll just give this a lick and a promise," as a spill on the floor is mopped up without moving any of the furniture. The real meaning- I'm in a hurry and I'm busy so I am going to just give it a lick with the mop and promise to come back and do the job right later.
"A Bone to Pick." The real meaning-Someone who wants to discuss a disagreement.
"It's Cattywampus." The real meaning-Something that sits crooked such as a piece of furniture sitting at an angle.
"Barking at a knot." The real meaning-Your efforts were as useless as a dog barking at a knot.
"Stringing around, gallivanting around, or piddling." The true meaning-Not doing anything of value.
More at a later time because I've got to skedaddle. The real meaning-Get out of here quickly.
