Missouri legislators are gearing up for the next session in Jefferson City by pre-filing a bill that would ultimately ask voters in the state to vote on getting rid of state income tax.

If approved by the voters the Missouri state constitution would be amended to abolish state income tax.

The pre-filed bill proposes a process of getting rid of state income tax incrementally, not all at once.

Starting January 8, 2025, the Missouri General Assembly session begins in Jefferson City, where a few proposals will cap state spending and funnel money back to residents/taxpayers.

Other states like Tennessee, Texas and Florida have no state income tax and have seen several years of consistent influx of people moving there. Could Missouri benefit in a similar way? That conversation begins next month at the capital.

The Missouri Dept. of Revenue says that an individual making $50,000 has almost $2,300 taken out of their paycheck for state income taxes every year.
