According to Explore Now or Never, Chicago is one of the 27 best places to visit in the US in the month of December. Chicago is 14th on the list behind places like New York City, Maui in Hawaii, Asheville in North Carolina, and Death Valley National Park. Why is Chicago a destination to travel to at the start of winter?!? On their site, they say...

"The Christkindlmarket is an authentic German Christmas market and is one of the most popular things to do in Chicago in winter...Even Scrooge lets the Bah Humbugs go at Goodman Theatre’s A Christmas Carol, and Joffrey Ballet reimagines a classic with its version of The Nutcracker...There’s nothing like ice skating with the city skyline as your backdrop. You know there is no bigger fan of the city of Chicago than me, but even I have to admit I was SHOCKED to see Chicago on this list. Chicago has a lot of great holiday options for people to check out, all of the things they listed are fantastic I have done them all. But, I still don't know if Chicago deserves to be on the list of the best places to visit during December, the weather is just soooo unpredictable. I will say, if you want a big city magical holiday experience Chicago is second to only New York City, and so that I do agree with.
