The Internet let out a collective roar of disapproval when word first surfaced that Ben Affleck would be the next actor to play Batman.

We're already a bit uncertain what to make of FOX's 'Gotham,' retelling the story of the caped crusader and his greatest villains from a young Jim Gordon's perspective, particularly as the pilot alone incorporates many of Batman's famous foes. Now, atop the Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, Poison Ivy and more, we've learned that Mr. Freeze himself might be up for the 'Gotham' treatment sooner rather than later.

‘Batman’ was a big enough moment in popular culture that, at one time, a perfectly reasonable sophomore in high school wanted to permanently attach a logo from a movie onto his only mode of transportation. And no other seemingly reasonable classmates of his were going to publicly disagree with this idea.

Okay, Batman fans. This is a big one. According to a new rumor, Ben Affleck will follow up major roles in 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' and 'Justice League' with a solo outing as the Caped Crusader in a film with the simple (and perfect) working title, 'The Batman.' But you've got to wait five years, because it's apparently eyeing a theatrical release in 2019.

We haven't heard much from FOX's forthcoming Batman prequel drama 'Gotham' since the initial trailer release, but now that press screenings have earned rave reviews, the network is putting everyone's favorite Bat-villains on the front lines. Holy change-up, Batman! Ben Affleck, two-time Oscar winner, director/star of 'Argo,' and former Daredevil, has just been announced as the new Batman in the Batman and Superman/ 'Man of Steel 2' movie.

When 'The Dark Knight Rises' came out -- even though the film left the door open for a spin-off or sequel  -- Christian Bale was consistent in saying that he would only come back if Christopher Nolan was at the helm. And though Warner Brothers is trying to get 'Justice League' going and would love to have him back, Bale has just said he will not be returning to play Batman.
