NBC reality trek Running Wild With Bear Grylls has made headlines in recent months for bringing high-profile figures out into the wilderness, but the survival series may yet have its biggest name ever, and all for a cause. Barack Obama himself will join Grylls in the wilds of Alaska, exploring some of the climate change of the region.

NBC confirmed the literal landmark special to tape later this year for a 2015 broadcast, in which Obama will join Grylls in Alaska to observe climate change effects in the area. In addition, Obama will become the first United States President to receive a crash course in survival skills from the noted expert.

Running Wild With Bear Grylls continues on with its second season on NBC, past episodes of which have seen Grylls exploring the wilderness with the likes of Kate Winslet, Zac Efron, Michelle Rodriguez and Channing Tatum. The second season finale has been scheduled for September 7, placing Obama’s special as an outlying installment.

Will Obama’s visit spread further awareness of climate change? What else might we learn from a special Running Wild With Bear Grylls?
