The 2016 Bassmaster Championships will be held Nov. 5-6 at Kentucky Lake near Paris, Tennessee. And two Sedalians will be among the 100 teams competing in that event.

Roger Waters and Kevin Johnston won the division shootout Sept. 18 at Truman Lake and are the current points leader with 240 after they weighed in five fish for a total of 15.31 pounds. Their joint effort snagged the fishing duo $3,270. They came in first out of 32 teams (40 teams had qualified, but only 32 showed up, Waters said).

"This was a Anglers in Action series held at Sterett Creek Marina on Sunday," Waters said. And by winning the division points championship for the year, we qualified for the Bassmaster Classic team series, which is on Kentucky Lake." For comparison, he added that about four Truman Lakes would easily fit into Kentucky Lake, which is around 160,000 acres.

The top three teams in each division shootout and the top 35 percent of all teams in each division qualified for the 2016 Tournament of Champions, according to Anglers in Action. The first place winner there will receive a Ranger Z519C fishing boat with an outboard motor.

Waters and Johnston grew up in the same neighborhood. "Kevin's just a few years older than me, so basically we've know each other since grade school," Waters said.

Becoming a champion fishing team seems like a lot of work, but as Waters puts it, "the fishing aspect of it is still a lot of fun." As for Kentucky Lake, the area is not entirely unfamiliar to Waters & Johnston. "We've fished there before, so we're looking forward to it," he said, adding that the fishing season for him typically starts in March and runs through November.

"We have several sponsors who have come on board to help us," Waters noted. Starline Brass, Bryant Motors and Hyrdo Tech (Nixa, Mo.) are their major sponsors.

We wish Waters and Johnston all the best luck during their November trip to Paris (Tennessee).
