Join us as we go “Into Africa” at the historic Liberty Center Association for the Arts. On Thursday, June 14 we will celebrate our country’s African heritage with a Juneteenth celebration beginning at 6:00 p.m. The event begins with a reception and a photo exhibit by Kathy Menefee. The photos depict Kathy’s travels to Africa. Following the reception will be a talk and slide show by Betty Hopkins. She will discuss her humanitarian trips to Africa and how she befriended a boy in the slums of Africa.  Through Betty and Kathy we will see beautiful scenery and meet native tribes. We will also discover what it’s like to grow up living in poverty and survival in the slums. Betty will discuss living conditions among the poor and how education has improved a young man’s life.  It is a story of sadness and triumph.  Finally, our African themed Juneteenth celebration will wrap up with the Liberty Center’s children’s theatre production “The Anansi Stories.” Anansi is a spider who lives in Africa. Anansi, being a lazy little spider, tricks the animals of the jungle into doing his work until the animals finally figure out what he is up to.  The play will be June 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. and June 24 at 2 p.m.   Let the Liberty Center take you across the world to learn about a whole new culture. Join us at 111 West 5th Street for these exciting events. To learn more, check out our website atwww.lcaasedalia.com.
