70% of our areas blood supply was generated by mobile blood drives hosted by schools, organizations and businesses. During the COVID-19 pandemic all of these mobile drives were cancelled and according to Community Blood Center these drives, like the one at UMC, are just coming back on line. This lack of blood is creating a great need for donors as hospitals return to normal operation and are using more blood every day.
Blood donors must be 17 or older. 16 or older with parental permission, you can get that permission slip here. And donors must weigh over 110 pounds. There are some things that might make you temporarily ineligible to donate blood like getting a tattoo or a piercing, travel to a different part of the world or having recently been sick. For a complete list of temporary reasons you might not be able to donate, as well as a list of things that might make you un-eligible to donate please click here.
Additionally if you are showing any of the signs of COVID-19, you are asked to skip donating blood this time around. These symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing. If you have had close contact with someone who has COVID-19, or is suspected of having COVID-19. You have been diagnosed or suspected of having COVID-19 until 28 days after your illness has resolved.
