Willie Nelson's indelible voice comes tinged with new sorrow on "Summer Wind," the first release of a song from his upcoming cover album of Frank Sinatra standards.

Lyrically and sonically Nelson stays true to the original, substituting Mickey Raphael’s harmonica for the big horn section Sinatra used decades ago. What starts as a summer romance memory turns melancholy by the end, but with Nelson singing at this stage in his life, one feels more than seasons pass. His modern-day phrasing adds to the lament, as does his guitar playing. The recorded version of the song finds both voice and guitar sounding stronger than he has in years, on par with musical tributes to Ray Price and Gershwin.

"Summer Wind" is Nelson’s first offering from My Way, a collection of his covers of standards and classics made famous by Frank Sinatra. The project — due to drop Sept. 19 via Legacy Recordings — will include known hits like “I’ll Be Around,” “Fly Me to the Moon,” “My Way” and “What Is This Thing Called Love.” The latter will feature Norah Jones.

The album will be available on CD, vinyl and digital formats.
