Willie Nelson Pens New Song Spoofing 2016 Election, Donald Trump
Willie Nelson has written a satirical song about Donald Trump and the 2016 presidential election. The new track, "Delete and Fast-Forward," will appear on Nelson's upcoming new album.
"You can't watch TV without seeing something about the inauguration," Nelson tells Rolling Stone, referring to Donald Trump's upcoming inauguration on Jan. 20. During the election, Nelson was a supporter of Bernie Sanders and Hilary Clinton, but he also called the polarizing process a "circus" and "the funniest thing I've ever seen" back in March of 2016.
“Seems like they’re just tearing each other down,” he said at the time. “They can’t wait to say something negative about somebody, and then they still want us to vote for them.”
Taking a cue from that divisive election cycle, Nelson penned "Delete and Fast-Forward" to help fans stay calm about what's to come. The singer hasn't offered a way to listen to the song just yet, but he has shared a few of its lyrics, which poke fun at the entire political process and take a decidedly more carefree approach to the future: "Delete and fast-forward, my friend / The elections are over and nobody wins / But don't worry too much, you'll go crazy again / Delete and fast forward, my friend."
The "Red Headed Stranger" is no stranger to social commentary in his music; in fact, this latest track adds to a portfolio of songs that see Nelson speaking out about issues related to war, the farming community, environmental causes and, of course, marijuana. The singer currently owns Willie's Reserve, a Colorado-based company that legally sells marijuana, and he doesn't seem too worried about any changes under a new president.
"Who cares?" Nelson tells RS in reference to possible future policy changes that may affect his weed distribution. "I didn't have any problem finding [marijuana] when it was illegal, and now that it's legal, it's still no problem. Making it illegal again won't stop people from smoking. They should have learned that back in prohibition days."
While there's no official word on Nelson's upcoming album quite yet, Rolling Stone reports that the new offering, God's Problem Child, will debut in April and, along with "Delete and Fast-Forward," will also include a funny approach to the singer's age and legacy: Nelson wrote the track "Still Not Dead" in response to a number online hoaxes announcing his death over the past few years.
“I got up two or three times in the last couple of years and read the paper where I’d passed away,” he says. “So I just wanted to let ’em know that’s a lot of horses--t.”
