Whiteman Air Force Base’s Future Confirmed
In a news release from U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, word comes that Whiteman's future will continue an important role through modernization efforts.
At a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing with top Air Force officials, McCaskill received confirmation that squadrons at Whiteman Air Force Base will continue their critical role flying and servicing bombers as modernization efforts begin.
McCaskill, a senior member of the Armed Services Committee, asked “I’m under the impression and I want you all to confirm this, that they will not be retired until there is sufficient number of B-21s, is that correct? … And I’m assuming that both bomber wings that are equipped with B-1 and B-2 bombers will be re-equipped with B-21s?”
Responding to her queston was Air Force Lieutenant General Jerry D. Harris, Jr., Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategic Plans and Requirements. He told McCaskill, “Right now the approach, ma’am, is yes. If you’re flying bombers today, you’ll be flying bombers in the future.”
Whiteman Air Force Base is a critical element of the nation’s ability to project power anywhere in the world at any time. While the B-2 is currently the most advanced stealth bomber in the inventory, the B-21 is projected to provide even greater capability with lower maintenance costs to the taxpayer.
