The Sacred Heart softball team stayed in the game until the end, but Sweet Springs/Malta Bend pulled away late for a 13-11 victory over the Lady Grems on Wednesday.

The game was tied at ten, with Sweet Springs/Malta Bend Batting in the bottom of the sixth, when an error scored two runs for Sweet Springs/Malta Bend.

Sacred Heart collected 14 hits and Sweet Springs/Malta Bend had 14 in the high-scoring affair.

Sacred Heart got on the board in the first inning, scoring two runs on an Emma Schouten single. SH scored four more runs in the fifth inning. Maria Mergen, Sammy Altena and Veronica Vanegas all drove in runs in the frame. Sweet Springs/Malta Bend surrendered 11 runs on 14 hits over seven innings.

Schouten started the game for Sacred Heart. The pitcher allowed 13 hits and 12 runs over five and a third innings, striking out nine and walking one. Zoe Martin threw two-thirds of an inning out of the bullpen.

Sacred Heart racked up 14 hits in the game. Keely Elwell, Claire Smeltzer, Hayden Altena, and Schouten each racked up multiple hits for Sacred Heart. Smeltzer and Elwell all had three hits to lead SH. Sacred Heart stole 12 bases during the game as two players stole more than one. Smeltzer led the way with five.

The Lady Grems are now 0-2 on the season. They play at Northwest (1-1) on Tuesday.
