State Historical Society of Missouri Celebrates its 125 Year History May 9
The State Historical Society of Missouri will be celebrating its 125th anniversary with a public program Tuesday, May 9, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Center for Missouri Studies, 605 Elm Street, Columbia.
Founded in May 1898 by the Missouri Press Association and established as a trustee of the state a year later, the State Historical Society is the premiere organization that collects, preserves, and shares Missouri history.
Missouri author, journalist and SHSMO trustee Bob Priddy will be in conversation with Gary Kremer, SHSMO executive director, about the Society’s legacy and future. The anniversary event is part of the History on Elm monthly series at the Center for Missouri Studies. Attendees will also receive a free book on Missouri history. Cake and punch will also be served.
The State Historical Society of Missouri is headquartered in Columbia on the MU campus with six research centers across the state on campuses in St. Louis, Cape Girardeau, Rolla, Springfield, Kansas City and Columbia.
Among the collections are genealogy records, political papers, manuscripts, diaries, rare books, maps oral histories, photographs, art, and published works on state and local history. The Society continues to collect newspapers published within the state and boasts one of the largest collections in the nation of state and local newspapers.
History on Elm series celebrates the 125th anniversary of the founding of the State Historical Society in 1898 by exploring a variety of topics on the second Tuesday at noon, each month, ranging from Missouri art and authors to unique and interesting collections at the State Historical Society.
