Sedalia’s New Macro Paver Has Arrived
The City of Sedalia’s new Macro Paver was on display Monday evening prior to a City Council meeting outside the Municipal Building, 2nd and Osage.
The purchase of the brand new and very clean macro paver was approved in the FY26 City budget and was also identified as a priority in the Council’s budget planning session earlier this year.
Council approved the purchase of the Peterbilt truck from Stepp Manufacturing, located in North Branch, Minnesota, at a cost of $540,346.71, for the Sedalia Street Department. $9,290 of that was the shipping cost.
Only $430,000 was budgeted for the macro paver in the FY26 budget, which was $110,056.71 shy of the total purchase price.
The supplier noted that the recently enacted Trump tariffs were a contributing factor in the markup. More Trump tariff increases were expected.

Staff recommended proceeding with the purchase of the macro paver to support long-term pavement preservation efforts and reducing reliance on outside contractors, it was noted.
To accommodate the increased purchase price, staff proposed that the number of trucks being bought be reduced from five to four, and downsizing two of those from tandem axle to single axle dump trucks equipped with plows and spreaders.
The purchase was made through a cooperative procurement process, using Omnia Contract #05-77.
“This is wonderful to have as an addition to our fleet. This will help us with our street maintenance, not only with prolonging the life span of the roadways, but also helping to make our roadways safer,” said Justin Bray, Public Works Operations Manager.
“Whenever we do a mill and overlay, we can do a protective coat with the macro paver. It’s basically a fancy slurry sealer. It uses multiple chemicals (emulsion oil, polymers, rock and Portland cement) which all get mixed into a pug mill and conveyed out, and then you put it into a drag box, and you can actually select different depths that you will be micro paving. It will do a little as a quarter inch, all the way up to an inch and a quarter,” Bray told KSIS Monday night. It can pave a road between eight and 12 feet in width.
He noted that the paver has a 30,000-pound front axle, and twin, or tandem, 45,000-pound rear axles on it, Bray noted.
“It is brand new, but it did have a hefty price tag,” Bray admitted. “But unfortunately, most construction equipment does. But this is definitely a great addition to our fleet, and especially with our maintenance program.”
The macro paver was transported from California with a shipping cost of $9,290 and arrived in Sedalia last Friday.
Bray stressed that it will be about a month before the macro paver is put into service, as those operating the huge, black truck with a white cab will need to be trained on it. Also, the drag box will need to be installed at the rear of the vehicle and Bray said VSS will arrive in Sedalia and perform that task as well as train Bray’s macro paving crew, which will take about a week to complete.
“I will probably put about six people on it, but I can probably get away with four,” Bray responded when asked how many crew members does the macro paver require to operate it.
“So the idea with this, too, is while I’ve got other projects going on, this will help me really maximize the amount of efforts that we’re putting out with our staff. We will be able to not only be doing some surfacing projects, but we will also be able to get caught up on some of our mowing, and other areas that we need to get done,” Bray said.
Fourth Ward Councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tem Rhiannon Foster took a good close look at the new truck as well and commented "I can’t wait to put this truck in action! It will help immensely with residential streets and we plan to get it to work ASAP."
