The Sedalia Police Department has received at least two reports of a new scam that gives the perpetrator access to the victim's computer files.

According to a statement from the Sedalia Police, the victims reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be a representative of the Microsoft Corporation.  The caller said that a software certificate was expired and directed the victims to visit a website.  On one occasion, the victim logged into the website, allowing the scammer to control the victim's computer and download files from it.

The victims reported that when they stopped cooperating with the scammers, the scammers claimed to know where the victims lived.  It is not know whether or not the scammers were actually able to find the victims' home addresses.

The Sedalia Police Department would like to raise awareness of this scam and reminds everyone to use their best judgement when answering unsolicited phone calls.
