The Sedalia City Council received an update from Sedalia Parks and Rec Director Amy Epple concerning future plans for the City's park facilities Monday night.

Planned upgrades include improvements at the following parks:

Liberty – fresh paint at the baseball stadium, netting will replace the chicken wire that has been in place for decades around the seating area; mulch will replace the pea gravel at various spots in the park, improvements to the island (phase one of a five-year plan), improvements to the Liberty Flyer train shed and track, improvements to the basketball court

Clover Dell – two new volleyball courts with white sand (with lighting) located where the old RC track was, a pre-fab restroom in the southeast area of the park, a shade structure at the dog park

Housel – a 22-year-old playground will be replaced with a new one, an old shelter replaced with a new one

Hubbard – three basketball courts to be remodeled and extended, improvements to the baseball field (a grant may be available as well)

Katy – two shelters need to be replaced, the skate park needs to be cleaned up, bathrooms need to be painted

Vermont – a futsal court with additional programming

Centennial – improvements to four shelter houses, which Epple said are generally booked a year in advance, addition of batting cages (to be located west of Mandy Thomas Field)

Other plans call for more special events, such as those featuring dogs, which Epple said are highly popular; movies in the parks (rotating to four parks throughout the season and allowing area residents to get to know one another), and adding Christmas lights to Liberty Park. Councilman Bob Cross immediately asked Epple if the entrance could say “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year” instead of “Happy Holidays” to which Epple replied, “possibly.”

Also Epple said she would like to see more sports programming in Sedalia Parks as well.

Sedalia Parks and Rec now has three recreation supervisors on the payroll, she noted.
