Sedalia Police arrested a 44-year old Sedalia man overnight on multiple charges, after a report of shots fired in the area of W. 3rd Street and S. Grand Ave.

A press release from the Sedalia Police Department says that a caller reported a man had shot at a house, located at 302 S. Grand Ave, Apt. A.

The suspect, 44-year old Rene Esparza, of Sedalia, allegedly tried to force entry into the apartment, while the victim tried to keep him out.

The report indicates that Esparza caused damage to the door and then retreated, firing two shots from a pistol.

While officers were on scene investigating the incident, another shot was heard from about one block away in the area of W. 4th and S. Grand Ave.

The report says that police ran towards the sound of the shot and found Esparza hiding behind a bush, with a gun at his feet. Esparza was reportedly looking at the firearm, instead of following commands from police. After a struggle with officers, Esparza was eventually arrested taken to the Pettis County Jail, where he was placed on a 24-hour hold.

Esparza is listed as a felon and criminal gang member. The pistol used in the incident had been reported stolen, according to the press release.

Authorities are seeking charges of, 1st Degree Burglary, 1st Degree Assault, Unlawful use of a Weapon, Armed Criminal Action, Unlawful Possession of a Concealed Firearm, and Receiving Stolen Property.
