The Sedalia Fire Department honored two of its own Monday night at the start of the October 5 City Council meeting.

Firefighter Joshua Nelson was awarded his 10-year certificate by Fire Chief Greg Harrell.

Nelson was hired Sept. 7, 2010, and is currently a Fire Academy instructor. He is a qualified field training officer for new hires, and an excellent mentor for younger firefighters at the SFD, according to Chief Harrell.

Josh is married to his wife Anna. They have one daughter and one child on the way.

Jacob Sherrill was then honored with a badge pinning. Sherrill was hired by the SFD in September of 2019 and has completed his Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications. He is currently taking an EMT class, which has been delayed due to COVID.

Sherrill was raised in Sedalia and attended Smith-Cotton High School, Chief Harrell said.

Conducting the pinning process was Firefighter Josh Nelson, who is Sherrill's friend and mentor.

In addition to the awards, Council also approved an ordinance authorizing Bothwell Regional Health Center to obtain a $5.5 million loan to buy eight new HVACs for the hospital.

Council also approved the purchase of entry team equipment for the Sedalia Police Department at a cost of $1,122.47. This was not a budgeted item, it was noted, but instead uncommitted federal forfeiture funds will be used.

Council also approved the expenditure of $8,000 to be used as matching funds to go with a $12,000 State Historic Preservation Grant to conduct a survey and inventory of the Victorian Towers District. The survey includes 408 parcels of land.

A request for proposals yielded six responses. Robert Rollings Architects, LLC, was chosen after a review by the Historic Preservation Commission and City staff (Downtown Development Specialist Raeanne Spears and Community Development Director John Simmons).

Elizabeth Heflin was appointed by Mayor John Kehde to the Central Business and Cultural District Board of Directors for a three-year term.

And finally, Council approved a liquor license renewal for Andrew T. Lyons dba CVS Pharmacy, 100 E. Broadway, for packaged liquor, Sunday sales and taste testing for $487.50.

Council then adjourned to closed-door session.
