Mules Football Pull Victory from Jaws of Defeat
The UCM Mules football team staged an amazing comeback against Nebraska-Kearney in the last five minutes of Saturday's game against the Lopers to emerge victorious with a 47-40 win.
With less than five minutes left in the game the Mules were losing 40-30. On 4th-and-7 from the 50 yard line quarterback Brook Bolles hit receiver Shae Wyatt running across the field for a first down, Wyatt ran all the way into the endzone to cut the Lopers lead to three points.
Lopers returner Darius Webb was then stripped of the ball on the kick off and the Mules recovered, giving them the ball back with 4:48 left on the clock. The Nebraska-Kearney defense held the Mules at bay and forced a field goal attempt. Kicker Samuel Knowlton tied the game from 21 yards.
The Lopers got the ball back with 3:33 left on the clock and marched down the field to the Mules 13 yard line where they set up for a game winning field goal. Defender Ubong Udom got his hand on the kicked ball, swatted it down and Dylan Price returned it 22 yards to the Mules 37. With twelve seconds left Bolles hit Cameron Saunders who ran into the end zone for the game winning touch down.
With this victory the Mules are 9-0 for the first time in UCM history. The Mules last home game of the regular season is next week at Walton Stadium with a game vs. the Lincoln Blue Tigers. The Blue Tigers are 1-8 on the season, and lost Saturday to Fort Hays State 66-6.
The Mules are 1-0 historically against Lincoln, beating them 49-6 on October 29, 2011. The Blue Tigers 1-8 record this season suggests there's a good chance the Mules will come away with a victory, but that's why they play the game. Kick off is at 1:00PM CST at Walton Stadium. If you haven't had an opportunity to witness this special season in person yet, this would be the game to do it. Tickets are available here.
