The Elms Hotel: Haunted Luxury in the Heart of Missouri
Recognized as the oldest hotel in Missouri, the Elms Hotel & Spa is also considered one of the most haunted places in the Show-Me State. With more than 130 years of history, if its walls could talk, they’d likely have volumes to share.
The Haunted History of the Elms Hotel
Originally built in 1888, the hotel once catered to the rich and famous. After two devastating fires destroyed much of the property, only one of the original buildings remains.
With such a long and dramatic history, it’s no surprise that ghost stories surround the hotel. In fact, the Elms offers a paranormal package that allows guests to explore the supernatural side of their stay.

Ghostly Legends That Still Linger
One of the more chilling legends claims the lap pool is haunted by the spirit of a gambler tied to illegal activities during the Prohibition-era speakeasy days. Staff members have also reported strange sights and sounds over the years.

Another story tells of a housekeeping ghost, often described as wearing a 1920s-style maid’s uniform, who some say still lingers to “assist” in her own spectral way.
Luxury Meets the Paranorma
Would you stay in a haunted hotel? I’m not sure I would, but the Elms might change my mind. With its luxurious spa, massive indoor and outdoor pools, and cozy outdoor fire pit and seating areas, it’s hard not to be tempted, ghosts or not.

Even presidents have stayed here. In 1948, Harry S. Truman visited the Elms along with six of his Secret Service agents. The hotel has endured fires, renovations, and, most recently, a $20 million restoration in 2011, which revived many of its historic features. The result is a breathtaking property that’s both elegant and steeped in mystery, a destination worth experiencing.
