Country duo Maddie & Tae have announced their new single, "Friends Don't," which will mark the group's first release since their move to UMG Nashville last year. While the song officially comes out on Friday (April 27), the duo offered a first listen of the track last month onstage at WQMZ. Readers can press play above to watch the performance.

It's been a rocky couple of years for Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye: Just as they had finished up writing the songs for a sophomore record in 2017, their label, Dot Records, shut down, leaving the country duo uncertain about when -- and if -- their new music would see the light of day.

"Friends Don't," the playful follow-up single to 2016's "Sierra," showcases Dye and Marlow's close harmonies and catchy interweaving melodies. The lyrics describe a platonic relationship that just might be a little something more: "They don't almost say I love you / When they're downtown somewhere just a little drunk / They don't talk about the future / And put each other in it / And get chills with every accidental touch," the duo sings in the second verse, listing all the things that "Friends Don't" do with each other.

The song isn't the first new music that Maddie & Tae fans had the chance to enjoy in 2018: The duo also performed another new song, "One Heart to Another," at the Ryman during  the 2018 Country Radio Seminar.

Backstage at the 2018 ACM Awards, the duo WYRK's Liz Mantel and Clay Moden that their eagerly anticipated sophomore record will be a concept album, telling the story of a relationship from start to finish. Appropriately, as the first single to be released in 2018, "Friends Don't" begins at the beginning, describing the early, flirty stages of a romantic relationship just starting to blossom between two friends.
