Lookout Tower Climbs the Sky More than 1,700 Feet Over Missouri
It oversees the highest point in Missouri so that gives you an idea of exactly how far a lookout tower seems to climb the sky over 1,700 feet up in the air.
I've got good news for you if you're afraid of heights. The Taum Sauk Lookout Tower near Ironton, Missouri is only 75 feet up in and of itself. However, it's near the highest point in Missouri which is Taum Sauk Mountain registering 1,772 feet above sea level. It's part of the St. Francois Mountains in Missouri which also used to be an ancient volcano, by the way.
The lookout tower is located here in proximity to Taum Sauk Mountain. It's the red designated spot.
A recent visitor shared a video on YouTube showing what it's like to climb this tower and the view you get from the top. It looks small as you approach it from the parking area.
Once you're underneath it, you get the scope of how towering it is though.
I have to climb how many steps?
But, the reward is worth it. You can see what looks like all of the Missouri Ozarks.
Maybe best to NOT look down the hole to the stairs though until you're really ready to descend back to Earth.
If you want to see the top of Missouri, be sure to check out the official Taum Sauk Mountain State Park website for details on what it's like to seemingly climb the sky.
