Learn How To Save a Life from Johnson County EMA

In any kind of emergency the time it takes first respondors to reach a victim can be a killer. It doesn't matter if it's some kind of accident that has hurt someone physically, or if it's someone suffering from a heart attack. In an emergency you and I can be the first responder until trained professionals arrive if we know what to do. Johnson County EMA has a class that'll do just that.

You may have seen ads recently, heard a public service announcement or read an article about a new campain called "You Are the Help Until Help Arives". The campaign is designed to get you and I to step in and get help to someone immediately.

There are five steps to remember to be the help until help arrives:

• Call 9-1-1
• Stay Safe
• Stop the Bleeding
• Position the Injured
• Provide Comfort

The FEMA web page talking about "You Are the Help Until Help Arrives" cites a National Acadamies of Science study saying trauma is the leading cause of death of people under 46. Immediate action from the person nearest them can save a life.

According to the Daily Star-Journal the course the Johnson County Emergency Management Agency is offering will go over these five steps and how you can apply them in an emergency. The class is scheduled for Tuesday June 11. There will be three sessions that day, and the course will be offered once a month on Tuesdays after that. Another way you can be the help until help arrives is to learn how to do CPR and administer first aid. The Warrensburg Park District and the American Red Cross are offering this training in June and July. The cost for this training is $60.00 and you can learn more register for it here.

Learning basic first aid and CPR isn't very hard and I suspect the training for "You Are the Help Until Help Arives" isn't very difficult either. The courses are designed for civilians like us and made fairly easy to apply should your or I find ourselves in a position to need the training. The knowledge provided, however, is priceless.
