Jason Aldean and his wife, Brittany, returned to Las Vegas exactly one week after a gunman opened fire on the crowd at Route 91 Harvest Festival, killing more than 50 people during Aldean's headlining set.

"Feels surreal being back in Vegas today. Visiting some of the strongest people we have ever met ... fighting the toughest battle of them all ... for their lives," Brittany says in a new Instagram post shared Sunday afternoon (Oct. 8). "You have helped us try to begin to start the healing process by seeing the strength each one of you have. Thank you for today. We will never forget."

These Are the Faces and Stories of the Las Vegas Shooting Victims

The post included a photo of the couple gazing at the Mandalay Bay hotel, which was adjacent to the shooting site and where the gunman was stationed when he opened fire. The visit comes on the tail of an emotional week, which included Jason's surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live just the night before.

After giving a moving speech addressing the Vegas tragedy — "We hurt for you and we hurt with you, but you can be sure we're going to walk through these tough times together, every step of the way," he said — Aldean offered up a cover of Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's "I Won't Back Down," made even more emotional due to Petty's unexpected death the day after the shootings.

Aldean canceled tour dates through the weekend out of respect for those who died, but plans to resume touring on Thursday (Oct. 12) in Tulsa, Okla.
