On Friday, Feb. 13, Sedalia School District 200 sent out a press release concerning the presence of asbestos in dust particles in a classroom at Smith-Cotton Junior High, 312 East Broadway.

District staff members have since thoroughly cleaned the affected room and resealed the floor with five coats of additional wax. The entire building was cleaned and all similar type flooring received additional coats of wax sealant.

The district then had Asbestos Consulting and Testing of Lenexa, Kansas, come in to test the air quality in the affected classroom and other targeted areas throughout the junior high on all three floors.

“We are pleased to report that those tests show no traces of asbestos in the air inside the junior high. In its report, ACT wrote: ‘The air samples were collected using high-volume air sampling pumps and 0.45-micron air sampling cassettes. The collected air samples were submitted to San Air Technologies Laboratories Inc. analytical laboratory for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). … The air sampling and laboratory analysis complies with Environmental Protection Agency … regulations. The TEM air sample analysis for each of the eight (8) collected air samples indicate NO asbestos structure were detected on any of the collected air samples.’” Sedalia District 200 said on Tuesday.

“The district appreciates your patience and concern as we addressed this matter in a timely fashion. The health and safety of our students and staff members remains our top priority. With the air test results showing no asbestos present, classes at the junior high will resume as normal on Wednesday, Feb. 18,”  a press release read on Tuesday.
