SCJH Eighth Graders Tour Nation’s Capital
Smith-Cotton Junior High 8th graders recently took the school’s annual Washington, D.C., trip.
The group included 35 students, five parents, three additional chaperones, and SCJH teacher Lori Hurt.
Over the course of three busy days, the group visited many of our nation’s most iconic landmarks and historical sites, including the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, Jefferson Memorial and the Martin Luther King Jr., Memorial.
Day 2 included a walk around the Capitol grounds, where they saw the United States Capitol, the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court of the United States.
They also toured the Petersen House, located across from Ford’s Theatre, and visited Arlington National Cemetery, where they were able to see the Changing of the Guard. The day continued with visits to the Marine Corps War Memorial, The National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Korean War Veterans Memorial.
On Day 3, the group began at Mount Vernon, where they toured the mansion and grounds that were once home to George Washington. They also visited three Smithsonian museums: the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of American History and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. They also included a tour of the International Spy Museum.
Hurt said, “Our tour guide and bus driver complimented our students on their behavior, and I couldn’t be more proud of them. They represented our school exceptionally well throughout the trip.”
