If you've ever considered becoming a therapist or counselor, the University of Central Missouri has a highly-ranked family therapy program, according to CouselingPsychology.org.

I've thought about something like this occasionally for much of my adult life. First, I've always liked helping others, and second, a high school career assessment said I'd be good at it, and my high school guidance counselor agreed. As an adult, I found myself in therapy and found one of my radio buddies went back to school and became a therapist, leaving the radio rat race behind.

I've never considered the University of Central Missouri a place to pursue that career. However, UCM offers Marriage and Family Therapy as one of two options for students to obtain a Master's Degree in Human Development and Family Science.

CounselingPsychology.org, which advocates for mental health care students and professionals, recently published its list of the best programs. UCM was ranked #3 on the list of the Best Marriage and Family Therapy Programs in Missouri.

UCM is also the only public university in Missouri offering a program like this.

Marriage and Family Therapy Director Dr. Tim Welch said in a press release, "Receiving accreditation from COAMFTE is a huge accomplishment for not only the faculty and Department of Human Services but for all of UCM."  He also thanked Dr. Adriatik Likcani, the outgoing program director, who guided the program to this significant milestone.

Students looking at obtaining a Master's in Marriage and Family Therapy may choose a two-year degree option, which prepares them to become marriage counselors or family therapists, or a one-year accelerated master's degree, which equips them with the knowledge and abilities to work in supervisory roles in different human services professions.

The University offers two tracks for those seeking a degree: a thesis track for those interested in pursuing doctoral studies or wishing to teach or conduct research and a non-thesis track focused on an integrative project course for those who want to become therapists.

The University of Central Missouri also offers hands-on clinical experience with the Central Missouri Clinic for Individual, Couple, and Family Therapy on campus.
