It's hard to believe that we're so far through the summer months that Missouri is within a couple of weeks of back-to-school activities. That's one reason why the Missouri Highway Patrol has issued some stern reminders about the best ways to keep your kids safe and the "most dangerous hour" during that time.

The Missouri Highway Patrol just issued warnings today about the upcoming and imminent back-to-school time. Their advisories are mostly common sense safety practices such as:

  • If walking to school, only cross roads in designated crosswalks and never between parked cars and make eye contact with drivers to make sure they see you
  • If riding a bike to school, wear safety gear like helmets and as near to the right side of the road as is safe to
  • When preparing to ride a bus, only board in safe designated areas and never try to retrieve any items that fall underneath a bus, but alert the driver for assistance and to make them aware

One of their biggest warnings involved young drivers and the most dangerous hour which is between 3p and 4p weekdays. Statistically, it's that one hour period when the most accidents happen involving drivers under 21 years of age.

The Missouri Highway Patrol also reminds everyone that they have an anonymous online safety reporting tool as a part of their Courage 2 Report Program where bullying or any safety issues can be reported.
