If you're familiar with this part of Missouri, then you know that I'm talking about Hermann. Perhaps it's my family's German heritage talking, but I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Hermann. There are few places in Missouri that have more of a welcoming vibe than there. If I had to break it down into categories, here's what my reasoning looks like.

German architecture and heritage

When you hear that Hermann is considered a Rhineland type of village, they're not wrong. This is the month that Hermann hosts a Maifest and then there are Oktoberfest celebrations virtually every weekend in (you guessed it) October.

Missouri River bluff views

There are many great Missouri River views in and around Hermann. The Kallmeyers Bluff is at the top of this sheer cliff rockface.

Excellent wineries and breweries

If you enjoy the fruit of the vine, Hermann, Missouri is loaded with options. The Visit Hermann website has numerous places in the city where you can enjoy every imaginable variety.

Walkable historic downtown

You can literally park in one spot in the morning and adventure all day just within the parts of Hermann that your feet can take you. Nearly everything is within a comfortable walking distance and the views while you walk aren't bad either.

Fall festivals and Oktoberfest atmosphere

An argument could be made that Oktoberfest weekends in Hermann are not just the best in Missouri, but anywhere in America. There are few places that can capture the German vibe like Hermann does that aren't actually in Germany.

Access to the Katy Trail

If you look at a map of the Katy Trail, you'll see that Hermann, Missouri is near the route. Many a biker and hiker has taken a respite from their Katy Trail adventures in Hermann.
