Experts at the USGS warn that the New Madrid Fault is likely to have a magnitude 6 or higher quake in your lifetime. The numbers vary from year to year, but generally it's believed there's a 40% chance that a major quake will strike sometime in the next 30 years. An earthquake possibly as large as the historic 8 magnitude quakes of 1811 and 1812 is not out of the question. Be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.
