The State Emergency Management Agency for the Missouri Department of Public Safety has shared a helpful list of urgent things you should do as soon as possible to make sure you and your family are ready if/when the New Madrid Fault unleashes the major quake experts say it's capable of. Here are 7 must-do preparedness tips for everyone in Missouri:

Experts at the USGS warn that the New Madrid Fault is likely to have a magnitude 6 or higher quake in your lifetime. The numbers vary from year to year, but generally it's believed there's a 40% chance that a major quake will strike sometime in the next 30 years. An earthquake possibly as large as the historic 8 magnitude quakes of 1811 and 1812 is not out of the question. Be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.
