High Winds Expected in Sedalia and Around the Area on Wednesday

Update: On Tuesday, December 14 the National Weather Service placed much of the area around Kansas City under a High Wind Warning including Kansas City, Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri; Independence; and Liberty. The High Wind Warning is in effect from 9:00 AM -12:00 Midnight CST Wednesday, December 15. It will be a windy day with sustained winds 30 -40 miles per hour and gusts expected up to 60-65 miles per hour.

Most of the Townsquare Media Sedalia / Warrensburg listening area is under a Wind Advisory for tomorrow. This includes Johnson and Pettis Counties and the communities of Sedalia, Warrensburg, Knob Noster, and Marshall. South winds 20-30 miles per hour are expected and gusts are expected up to 55 miles per hour. The Wind Advisory is in effect from 9:00 AM -12:00 Midnight CST Wednesday, December 15.

Additionally, if severe thunderstorms develop, the most potential for damage will come from high winds in the storms.

The National Weather Service suggests securing outdoor ornaments and furniture. Keep two hands on the wheel while driving and give high-profile vehicles plenty of room. And stay aware of your surroundings and be mindful of blowing and falling objects.

Evergy says via their Facebook page they're ready for tomorrow's winds and have crews standing by if the winds impact electric service. "Extreme winds are in the forecast for Wednesday which can lead to potential outages. Our crews are prepared and ready to respond in that event." Their post suggests customers sign up for outage alerts, which you can do here.

If you have some Christmas decorations out on the lawn, or not fastened securely to your home, you might want to bring them in Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning. You might also want to pull your garbage bins close to your home. It's expected that Wednesday will be a very windy day for most in West Central Missouri.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for Kansas City, Jackson County, and counties north and northwest of Pettis and Johnson Counties. While Warrensburg, Sedalia, Knob Noster, and Marshall aren't under the High Wind Watch, it's still going to be a gusty, windy Wednesday around those cities.

The High Wind Watch is in effect Wednesday from 9:00 AM CST through midnight. Southerly wind gusts between 50-60 miles per hour are expected in the Kansas City area, and gusts in excess of 60 miles per hour are possible in far northwest Missouri and northeast Kansas.

Closer to home wind gusts between 40-50 miles per hour are expected in the Sedalia, Warrensburg, and Marshall areas. Gusts will be between 35-40 miles per hour in the Columbia, Jefferson City area.

The National Weather Service says the highest wind gusts are expected between 3:00 PM -10:00 PM CST.

These high winds can be hazardous to those traveling, especially those in high-profile vehicles. Wind gusts can blow down trees or powerlines and power outages are possible according to the National Weather Service.

Additionally burning is discouraged on Wednesday because strong winds and dry fuels elevate the risk of fire.

If there's any good news with this, it's that as of Monday evening, December 13, storm chances are low. Of course, if storms do occur, some could be strong to severe with damaging winds as the main threat.
