One man drowned and a woman nearly drowned in the Meramec River on Saturday afternoon.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that 48-year-old Bryan L. Wilson and 50-year-old Angela M. Wilson, both of High Ridge, were floating down the Meramec River, downstream from Highway 109 around 1 p.m., when they voluntarily left their flotation device and were on a rock.

Angela Wilson then entered the water and began to struggle. Bryan Wilson then entered the water in an effort to rescue Angela. He then began to struggle and was unable to rescue himself.

Two other floaters in the area noticed the Wilsons struggling and attempted to rescue them. Bryan Wilson was taken to the shore and CRP efforts began. However, efforts were unsuccessful and Bryan Wilson was pronounced deceased at 1:40 p.m., by Eureka Fire Protection District personnel. The body was taken to the St. Louis County Medical Examiner's Office.

Angela Wilson was transported to SSM Health St. Clare Hospital in Fenton for treatment of moderate injuries.

Jefferson County Deputies and High Ridge Fire also assisted the Troopers on scene.
