Survival Adult Abuse Center to Host 10th Annual Girls’ Night Out

The Survival Adult Abuse Center will celebrate its 10th annual Girls’ Night Out event from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. May 3 in the University of Central Missouri Ballroom.

“We are excited to be celebrating 10 years of providing a fun evening for the support of a good cause,” said event organizer Joy Lakey. “This year we’re planning a contest where attendees can wear their best bling to compete for a special prize to go along with our theme of Diamonds Are Forever. There will also be a couple’s contest. In celebration of our 10th year we encourage ladies to bring a date for the event. We’ll have The Morton Sisters for entertainment, plus a live and silent auction with great new items, food, and raffles.”

Survival Adult Abuse Center, Inc. was formed in 1982 as an emergency shelter and a crisis hotline for domestic violence victims. It quickly became apparent that more services were needed. The current shelter facility was purchased in 1997 and a second shelter was added in 2017. Survival began serving Henry County in 2015. Girls’ Night Out is the major fund-raiser for the organization.

All of the monies raised from this event directly fund services to clients who desperately need help. These services include, but are not limited to, a 24-hour confidential crisis hotline, 24-hour emergency shelter, referrals to other agencies, case management, crisis intervention, court advocacy, resource advocacy, sexual assault advocacy, a volunteer program, and community education initiatives.

“This event allows Survival to expand and increase its services to both residents and non-resident victims in Johnson and Henry Counties,” explained board member Joni Porter. “Our goals are to provide shelter and outreach services to domestic violence victims, while educating the survivors and the community on the nature and dynamics of domestic violence.”

Survival's new Executive Director April Roller said “The organization has been growing the past few months. I am excited to share our new direction with our community. Survival is improving our outreach and residential services to men, women, and children who identify as survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The new programs for survivors have allowed Survival team members the ability to help clients improve their lives and achieve dreams that the clients had once thought impossible.”

Tickets for Girls’ Night Out are $30 each or $240 for a table of eight. Tickets are available at the UCM Career Services Office, Country Pets and Ponds, Warrensburg Chamber of Commerce, Shaw Accounting Office, and the Survival Office.
