The Society for Human Resource Management and the United Way are teaming up for an HR Day of Service event across the state of Missouri on May 4. In Sedalia, a free Employment Expo will be taking place at the Salvation Army.

"It's not a traditional job fair, it's an event that will provide information on local resources for people who are looking for work, and are currently working," said Robin Balke with the Society for Human Resource Management. "Some of the representatives will have information on everything from resume writing, job hunting and how to dress for an interview; to transportation options, childcare options, things that sometimes are a barrier for people to find employment. We'll also have information how you can skill-up. Sometimes people need to improve or sharpen their skills, or obtain a new skill in order to find a job, or to move up in their current organization."

Staci Harrison with Sedalia-Pettis County United Way says that the Employment Expo is all-encompassing in covering issues related to employment. "Another area [that will be addressed] is being able to help folks identify why they can't keep a job, or why they're having a hard time getting a job. And for those who might be struggling to look for work, or even struggling to get up every day to go to work because of mental illness, we'll also have resources there to help them."

The Employment Expo will be free to the public at the Salvation Army at 1200 East Broadway. There will be two sessions on May 4: 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

"The whole goal is to get people to work, and to get them into a position which they can feel good about, and be sustainable and productive citizens of our community," said Harrison.
