Drake White Says Sophomore Album Will Be ‘Laid Back’ But ‘Fun’
It hasn't quite been a year since Drake White released his freshman record, Spark, on Aug. 19, 2016, but the singer is already hard at work on his sophomore album. With three Top 40 songs from Spark -- including the Top 5 hit "Livin' the Dream" -- to his name, White insists he isn't nervous about his ability to repeat his success on his next set of tunes.
"For me, it’s what I love to do, and I’ve found I love being able to do what I love and have the passion," White tells The Boot. "I try not to put too much pressure on me. It is just what it is, and you create what you want to create, and live each day happily, and the rest will follow."
For the still-untitled project, which he hopes to release by the end of the year, White says he's incorporating all of his favorite sounds, and trusting that his fans will like the music he's drawn to as much as he does.
"I’m all about that back-porch, roots-y sound," explains White. "I’m always chasing the sound that is organic and is kind of real -- a real kick, real high hat, good thudding bass ... It’s going to be laid back, but it’s also going to also be fun. We haven’t created it yet, so, I know what I’m going for, but you never know how it’s going to come out until you get out there and stick your sounds in the microphone."
Of course, White will have to find studio time in between his time on the road. After opening for artists such as Toby Keith, Little Big Town and the Zac Brown Band, the Alabama native has recently been headlining his own shows. His favorite part of performing is much more about the fans than the music.
"[It's being] able to go out there and give somebody a disconnect from whatever their hurts, their habits, their hangups [are] -- whatever they’ve got going on; to go out there and know people are coming to see you, to experience a moment in time," White shares. "To bring folks together, almost like a revival, is my favorite part -- to meet people, shake hands and just love on folks."
