Courtney Cole Gets Real About Career Ups and Downs in New Docuseries [WATCH]
In 2015 and 2016, Courtney Cole was feeling on top of the world: She signed a new publishing deal, released an EP and scored slots opening for Miranda Lambert and Kenny Chesney; she made The Boot's list of New Country Artists to Watch in 2016, too. The singer-songwriter has had a bit of a rough couple months, though.
"Darkness. That's what I've been living in over the past several weeks," Cole says at the beginning of the first episode of her new docuseries, Courtney Cole: The Rockumentary. "Sounds a little dramatic, but it's true."
As Cole explains, in a two-week span, she and her boyfriend ("the love of my life," she calls him) broke up, she and her manager parted ways, and her publishing deal ended. She recently played at the 2017 Taste of Country Music Festival, but she was mostly working as an Uber driver to make ends meet.
"I wish I could tell you that I handled all of this loss like a champ, but, to be honest, I didn't," Cole admits. "I spent a lot of days in my bed, crying, wishing things would have turned out different and thinking that the universe was playing one big joke on me, but I realized very quickly that that was getting me nowhere."
So, Cole decided to chronicle her life on video. Courtney Cole: The Rockumentary's first episode sets up her story so far, but by the end of the 15 minutes, viewers learn that Cole's going to make a change: She's going to move to California -- Los Angeles, specifically -- for the summer. Episode 2, which readers can watch below, follows Cole and her mom's trip from Nashville to LA.
"[This series is about] kind of going from a little bit of brokenness to finding joy," Cole tells The Boot. "[I] decided to kind of pick up and go on with my life, and that's kind of what this story is about."
Cole launched Courtney Cole: The Rockumentary on June 15 and will be posting new episodes throughout the summer. She's filming and editing the series by herself, on her iPhone and Mac computer. Readers can follow along on Cole's YouTube page and Facebook page.
