In a surprise move on Monday night (Feb. 5), Chris Janson has been invited to become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry.

Opry member and good friend Keith Urban surprised Janson with the invitation live onstage during his sold-out show at the Ryman Auditorium on Monday night, right after joining hin for a cover of John Michael Montgomery's “Sold."

"Chris, it’s amazing for you to have a sold-out show at the Ryman," Urban said. "It’s one of my most favorite places in the world to play. I remember when I was invited to be a member of the Grand Ole Opry here, so well, it’s only natural I say we would like to invite you to be the newest member of our family!"

"The Opry is where my heart is," an emotional Janson responded. "I could probably die if I never got to do anything else."

Chris Janson Plays Last Question!

The invitation tops off a dizzying few years since Janson -- previously known for penning hit songs for Tim McGraw and more -- pulled off one of the biggest breakthroughs in recent country music history with "Buy Me a Boat." He's followed it up with "Fix a Drink" and his current single, "Drunk Girl," and his sharp songwriting and electrifying live performances have not only earned him the love of his fans, but the respect of his peers.

"Over the course of more than 100 appearances since his Opry debut in 2013, Chris has become a favorite of Opry fans and fellow performers alike," Opry General Manager Sally Williams says in a press release. "It’s been amazing to watch him bring audiences to their feet night after night. He is so passionate about the Opry, including its rich history, the camaraderie it builds between generations of fans and artists, and its place in country music’s future. We could not be more thrilled to officially welcome him later this spring."

Janson's next appearance on the Opry is set for Feb. 20, with his formal Opry induction slated for later in the spring. Keep an eye on Janson's and the Opry's social media for details about the induction.
