Brett Young’s ‘In Case You Didn’t Know’ Hits Major Platinum Milestone
Congratulations are in order for Brett Young: The rising star's single "In Case You Didn't Know" has gone platinum!
"In Case You Didn't Know" is Young's first song to sell one million copies; it's also the only song released by a country artist in 2017 to hit that milestone. The platinum-earning tune follows Young's gold-certified first single, "Sleep Without You."
Young, who wrote 11 of the 12 songs on his Brett Young album -- the project on which "In Case You Didn't Know" appears -- penned “In Case You Didn’t Know” with some of his songwriting buddies, Tyler Reeve, Kyle Schlienger and Trent Tomlinson, during a songwriter's retreat in Mexico. Tomlinson began telling a story about something that his mom used to say when growing up, giving Young and company a spark of inspiration.
"[Tomlinson] said when he was a kid, every time he would leave the house, his mom would stop him on his way out the door, and she’d say, 'Trent, in case you didn’t know, I love you,'" Young recalls. "I thought, 'Wow, that’s such an everyday expression, obvious thing, that I think is overlooked ...
"When we wrote it, we wanted to keep it really down the middle and basic, because it ended up being a love story that we wrote, and we wanted everybody to be able to make it their love story," Young adds, "so we just kept it really simple and said what we would like to say the person that we love, or we would like to hear back from the person that we love."
In addition to the song itself going platinum, Young's music video for "In Case You Didn't Know" has been nominated for the Breakthrough Video of the Year award at the 2017 CMT Music Awards. This summer, Young will be out on the road with Lady Antebellum, serving as an opening act for their You Look Good World Tour.
