Who would've thought that buying diapers could get you a break on your taxes? Well, if you live in Missouri, it could come true.

State Representative Cora Faith Walker has filed legislation that would authorize a tax credit for individuals and businesses that contribute to programs that address diaper need in Missouri. Walker offered HB 2440 to create a tax credit in an amount equal to 55 percent of a taxpayer’s contribution to a qualified diaper bank.

Walker said the goal of the program is to encourage private investment in programs that enhance access to diapers. She noted that significant health risks result when an infant or toddler spends a day or longer in one diaper because of lack of access to clean diapers. Walker said diapers cost families approximately $1,000 per year per child, and there is virtually no public assistance provided to low-income families to help offset the cost.

If signed into law, HB 2440 would enact the tax credit for all tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2019. The bill now awaits assignment to committee for further discussion.
