More than 150 local veterans were honored and thanked for their military service Wednesday morning during the Smith-Cotton High School JROTC program’s annual Veterans Day breakfast and ceremony.

With the entire S-C student body watching and waving American flags, veterans from each branch of the U.S. military were acknowledged and their service’s theme was sung by the New Score and Cabaret show choirs.

The guest speaker was state Rep. Nathan Beard, R-Dist. 52, who told the veterans and students assembled, “Glory is not in achievement but in the sacrifice. ... We must endeavor to serve our veterans as well as they have served our nation.” The ceremony ended with a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.
