Wichita Wild Win the 2013 CPIFL Championship
The Wichita Wild (12-2) defeated the Salina Bombers (10-4) with a final score of 47-34 to win the Champions Bowl I. Quarterback Rocky Hinds powered Wichita’s offense by completing 18 of 22 passes for 163 yards and four touchdowns, adding 17 more yards and one touchdown on the ground to be named MVP of Champions Bowl I. The Wild defense picked off the CPIFL regular season MVP quarterback Dane Simoneau three times en route to their victory.
Salina earned the first crack at the field but their drive ended at midfield when their field goal attempt was blocked by Wild defensive lineman James McCartney, inspiring Wichita’s offense to pour in three consecutive touchdowns courtesy of a four yard run by Hinds, a 10 yard pass from Hinds to wide receiver Joe Kassanavoid, and a one yard run by running back Tywon Hubbard for a 21-0 lead midway through the second quarter. Wichita’s defense provided a great boost during the scoring streak by forcing two Salina turnover on downs. The Bombers finally broke their scoring drought with a four yard touchdown pass from Simoneau to wide receiver Pelton Smalls, but the Wild offense hit back two minutes later with a five yard strike from Hinds to wide receiver Tim Simmons to maintain a 27-7 advantage. With five seconds left in the first half, Wichita looked poised to take a three score lead into halftime, but Simoneau found wide receiver Attrail Snipes with a 13 yard touchdown pass for a 27-14 Wild advantage at the break.
The scoring picked up in the third quarter with a 49 yard field goal by Wild kicker Alex Fambrough followed by an interception by defensive back Matthew Pearson that led to a one yard touchdown pass from Hinds to Kassanavoid. Salina followed with an offensive drive that ended with an interception by Wichita defensive back Chris Hemphill on a short field, but he fumbled the ball on the return and was recovered by the Bombers, which led to a 34 yard touchdown pass from Simoneau to wide receiver Ricky Roberts. The Wild offense responded with a 10 yard toss from Hinds to Simmons and a 28 yard field goal by Fambrough, putting the Wild ahead 47-21. With 3:37 left in the game, Salina aimed for one last comeback push as Simoneau connected on two touchdowns, comprised of 24 yards to Roberts and 31 yards to Snipes, slicing Wichita’s lead to 47-34. After recovering the onside kick, Salina had a chance to cut the score to single digits with 19 seconds left in regulation, but Wichita defensive back Kendrick Harper shut the door on the Bombers with a championship sealing interception and a 47-34 Wild victory over the Bombers.
After the game the CPIFL announced that quarterback Rocky Hinds was the Champions Bowl I MVP. Hinds was 18 for 22 in completions for 163 yards and 4 touchdowns. Hinds also ran the ball 3 times for 18 yards and one touchdown.
