At the same time people across the nation are observing American Heart Month in February, a group of Johnson County residents are busy making plans to raise money in the fight against cardiovascular disease. Working directly with the American Heart Association, the committee has set Saturday, Oct. 3 as the date for the 2015 Johnson County Heart Walk. The event will take place on the University of Central Missouri campus for the third consecutive year.

To help reach the $81,000 goal, the committee is looking for individuals who are willing to serve as team captains and participate as walkers. Committee members also are interested in working with representatives of local organizations, businesses, and industries who want to help support the Heart Walk through sponsorship or company participation.  Individuals who want to learn more about the Johnson County Heart Walk or to join a team are urged to visit the website, www.johnsoncountyheartwalk.org. They also can contact  Amanda Avent  for more information at 660-441-0090.

The 16th-ranked Mules basketball team is back in action tomorrow night for the final home game of the regular season hosting Missouri Western at 7:30 p.m.  The Jennies kick off the basketball action with a 5:30 tip-off.

The Early Childhood Hunger Operation (ECHO) at UCM will be at the Mules and Jennies basketball games tomorrow night, accepting donations of canned food items, snacks and juice drinks. All donated items will help to provide backpacks that are pre-filled with food and drink items for preschool children who may go hungry when they are out of school.

Everyone who makes a donation will receive a coupon good for a free box of popcorn, courtesy of UCM Concessions by Sodexo, as well as be entered in to a drawing to win $50 in gift certificates from UCM Athletic sponsors.  Monetary donations will also be accepted by ECHO.
